Trucking Insurance Basics

General Liability

In a nutshell it covers your companies liability, or the defense of said liability, in the event you get involved in a lawsuit from a third party.  Does not cover injuries to employees.  But some GL forms provide wording that suggests they might be under special circumstances. Bodily Injury and Property Damage: If someone is injured or their property is damaged due to your business operations (not related to trucking operations), CGL would cover the legal and medical costs. For instance, if a customer or supplier is injured in your office or at your warehouse, this policy would provide coverage.
Personal and Advertising Injury: This covers non-physical damages and lawsuits that can result from claims of libel, slander, invasion of privacy, copyright infringement, and other forms of defamation or infringement in your advertising.

Automobile Liability

This type of insurance covers liability claims resulting from the accident itself.  This is generally the most expensive portion of the insurance but can be lessened through common sense safety guidelines and appropriate follow through.  Insurance is one of the cost variables in trucking that isn't fixed.  And it's in your hands how much it costs.  What we mean by that is that you're going to pay roughly the same cost for fuel, tires, ropes, chains, etc. but the cost of insurance is directly proportional to how well your company operates.  If it's high in the beginning, it doesn't necessarily mean it'll always be high.  Some clean DOT inspections and on time payment will have the rates coming down in no time.

Motor Truck Cargo

Motor Truck Cargo Insurance covers the cargo that's being transported, in case it's damaged or lost during transit. And Trailer Interchange Insurance would cover damage to a trailer being pulled under a trailer interchange agreement.  MTC policies vary widely between insurance companies so it's important to make sure your insurance company provides coverage for the goods you're hauling.  When an insurance claim is denied it is most often due to a gap in cargo insurance.  Although too often briefly discussed by insurance companies and their representatives it is arguably the most important coverage to thouroughly investigate and understand.
